Clanker insults, and what each one means
Dirty clanker, clankerslop, ok clanker, clanker jail. A phrasebook for the whole clanker vocabulary, including the fake politics that grew around it.
Updated
The word travels in phrases more than on its own. Dirty clanker, shut up clanker, clankerslop, plus an entire invented politics of sympathizers, rights marches and jail sentences. Each one is a joke about a machine, and each one means something slightly different. Here is the set, with the differences.
If you want the argument about whether the word counts as a slur, that is a separate question and it lives on clanker, the internet’s new AI slur. This page is the phrasebook.
The core insults
dirty clanker
Clanker with the contempt turned up, aimed at a machine that has just wasted your time. It is the kiosk that rejects a barcode four times, the chatbot that loops you back to the main menu, the model that invents a citation and then apologises for inventing it. The word adds no information whatsoever. It helps enormously.
tin-skinned clanker
A clanker mocked for being cheaply made. Lifted from the trooper register, where the joke was that droids came off a production line by the thousand, and now aimed at anything that fails at a task a person would find trivial. It sounds deliberately antique, which is most of why people enjoy saying it.
clankerslop, or clanker slop
Machine-generated output bad enough to have a texture. Clanker plus slop. It covers the six-fingered hand, the recipe with a lie in step four, the 800-word answer that could have been one line, and the comment that opens with “Great question!” People write it both ways, and the people who care which way are losing.
shut up clanker
A complete sentence with no argument attached, which is the point of it. You say it to an AI that has handed you three paragraphs when you wanted a number, or to a colleague whose email obviously came out of a model. Responding to it seriously is the losing move, which is also the point.
ok clanker
The dismissive one, borrowed wholesale from “ok boomer” and doing the same job: refusing the debate rather than losing it. Deployed most often on a reply that is technically correct, extremely long, and clearly generated. It closes threads that a counterargument would have kept open for another day.
hello clanker
The greeting version, said in a bright customer-service voice to a machine you are about to be rude to. Walking up to a kiosk. Opening a chat window. It is a joke about being polite to something that cannot notice, and about how many of us keep doing it anyway.
keep it pushing you dirty clanker
A dismissal with the walk-away built in, out of the “keep it pushing” family. It means move along, this is finished, and you are a machine. Mostly it appears as a caption over a clip of an AI doing something stupid rather than said out loud to anything.
The factions
At some point the joke stopped being one insult and grew a fake political system around itself, which is the funniest thing that has happened to it.
A clanker sympathizer is somebody accused of being too nice to AI. Thanking a chatbot at the end of a session. Defending a model in the replies. Saying “well, it is genuinely useful though.” The charge is always half serious and there is no defence available, since arguing that you are not one is exactly what one would do.
Anti-clanker is the opposing badge, worn loudly by people who want the machines gone and quietly by people who used one to write the post saying so. Clanker rights is the parody-activism version, with slogans and an imaginary march, and it exists mostly to bait sympathizers into agreeing with it sincerely.
Clanker army covers whatever fleet of bots is currently ruining a comment section, and has drifted to mean any set of accounts posting in the same rhythm, human or not. Clanker jail is where you sentence a machine that has failed you, out loud, with a term of years attached. Clanker propaganda is the catch-all for anything engineered to make you feel warm about AI: the ad with the piano music, the launch video with the kid, the model that opens by telling you what a great question you asked.
None of it is organised. There is no group, no forum, no membership. The joke is that the entire vocabulary of a movement got bolted onto an argument with a self-checkout machine, and it kept growing because the format is very easy to add to.
Calling a specific AI a clanker
The word gets pointed at named products constantly, and the target changes what it means. ChatGPT takes most of the traffic, because most people talk to it most often, and “ChatGPT is a clanker” is usually a complaint about tone rather than accuracy: the throat-clearing, the summary of your own question read back to you, the closing offer to help with anything else.
Google’s AI Overviews get called clankers for a different failure, which is answering confidently over the top of the page you were trying to reach. Self-checkout kiosks earn it for unexpected items. Bank app assistants earn it for pretending a menu is a conversation.
Is it fine? Nothing in a chat window notices, which is the reason most people are comfortable with it and the reason some people are not. That argument is the one the parent article takes on, and it deserves more room than a paragraph here.
Other slang for robots
Clanker is the current word, and it landed on top of a long pile. Tin can is the oldest and softest. Toaster came out of Battlestar Galactica and still gets used by people who want you to know they watched it. Skinjob is from Blade Runner and is far nastier in context than it sounds out of it. Droid and bot are neutral, which is why neither works as an insult on its own.
NPC is the near miss. It has the same shape, but it points at people who seem to be running on script, so it is a different insult wearing similar clothes. Both are defined in the slang dictionary and in the 2026 brainrot dictionary.
FAQ
What does dirty clanker mean?
It means clanker with the contempt turned up, aimed at a machine that has just wasted your time. The kiosk that rejects a barcode four times, the chatbot that loops you back to the main menu, the model that invents a citation and then apologises for inventing it. The word adds no information and helps enormously.
What is clankerslop?
Machine-generated output bad enough to have a texture. Clanker plus slop. It covers the six-fingered hand in a generated image, the recipe with a lie in step four, the 800-word answer that could have been one line, and any comment that opens with "Great question!" It is written both as one word and two.
What is a clanker sympathizer?
Someone accused, half seriously, of being too nice to AI. Thanking a chatbot at the end of a session counts. So does defending a model in the replies, or saying that it is actually quite useful. The charge has no defence, since arguing that you are not one is exactly what a sympathizer would do.
What does it mean to call someone a clanker?
Aimed at a person, it means their output reads like a machine wrote it. The email with three bullet points and no information, the reply that restates your question before answering it, the comment that praises you before disagreeing. It is an accusation about texture rather than about intelligence.
What's another word for a robot in slang?
Clanker is the current one. Before it there was tin can, toaster, bot, droid, and skinjob, most of them out of science fiction. NPC gets used the same way but points at people rather than machines, which is a different insult wearing similar clothes.
